Rams Owner Frontiere Dies

The almost 30 year owner of the Los Angeles/St Louis Rams, Georgia Frontiere died yesterday after battling breast cancer.  She was 80.

Rams owner Georgia Frontiere has passed away, after an extended battle with breast cancer.

She was 80.

“Georgia Frontiere was the first lady of sports in her native St. Louis,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said.

In 1995, she brought the Rams from Anaheim to St. Louis.  She became owner 16 years earlier, when her husband, Carroll Rosenbloom, died in an accidental drowning.

Rosenbloom previously owned the Colts, but swapped franchises with Rams owner Robert Irsay in the early 1970s.

The ramifications of Mrs. Frontiere’s passing to the status of the franchise are unclear.  In many cases, the team is sold following the death of the owner, often in order to fund estate taxes.
