The draft is over and the rookies are getting ready to start their rounds of newcomer briefings to learn what it will be like to be part of the NFL.  The Minnesota Vikings personnel office switches from scouting to contract writing and this is where Rob Brzezinski works his magic and gets our draft picks and rookie free agents signed.  The Vikes drafted 5 players, the smallest draft class in their history, and as of sundown Sunday, and agreed to terms with another 16 rookie free agents, but in the bunch, not a single true offensive tackle.

Byant McKinnie is in the middle of legal actions for his part in a bar fight in Miami and almost assuredly looking at a suspension from the league for at least a couple of games, if not conviction and jail time.  Ryan Cook played adequately in his first year as a starter but had problems handling speed rushers just like McKinnie on the left side, plus is listed as Matt Birk’s backup.  Depth was thin at best and it looked like in this tackle heavy draft that selecting an OT would be a top priority.  Well, it did not happen.

From coach Childress’ press conference Sunday afternoon comes this:

Q. How do you feel about the offensive tackle position, especially when you consider left tackle Bryant McKinnie’s offseason legal troubles?

A. I’m OK with it. We have Chase Johnson, [who] I believe will be a year better. You have Artis Hicks, who has that swing capability there, and Marcus Johnson. So none of that has changed. Nobody has left us in that regard there and I’d have to say that those five guys played all right last year.”

To me this indicates that he is quite comfortable with going with what we’ve got already on the books.  I wonder if mentioning Chase Johnson first is a subliminal way of indicating his game plan replacement should [more like when] Bryant misses some playing time.

The biggest surprise to me was that we didn’t target an OT in the draft, or felt that there were none left worth drafting once the Vikings were back on the clock.

We picked up John Sullivan of Notre Dame, another smart center [which may indicate that Ryan Cook most likely will spend his career at right tackle] and that was it.  Childress said, “And then the Sullivan kid, we talked to [Notre Dame coach] Charlie Weis today. I like some of the things that he brings to the table. He’s a tough guy, a very smart guy. He’s from Greenwich, Conn., originally. I like what he brings.”

Sullivan was gracious with his comments after being selected a Viking.  “At this point, I’m with a team that I’m incredibly happy to be with,” he said. “I couldn’t be happier with the result of how the draft went and looking at draft stock, up, down, it doesn’t matter to me at this point. I’m on a great team and I’m happy with my situation.”

He also said that he would play anywhere the team needed him when asked about the ability to play guard, but with Matt Birk completing the final year of his contract, Sullivan can be viewed as his replacement.  He is very excited to learn from Birk, the man he will likely succeed.  “I think that’s as great a situation as a young player can have,” Sullivan said. “Matt Birk is an incredible player. He’s someone that I have looked up to for a long time. When it comes to centers in the NFL, he is second to none.”

A bit of trivia over the selection: Sullivan is only the third center ever drafted by the Vikings - Matt Birk in 1998 and Mike Malano in 2000 were the other two.

Then if you look at “round 8”, the signings of the undrafted rookie free agents, the only lineman signed was Drew Radovich T/G of USC.  Scout.com had Radovich listed as their #6 OG which makes me feel a little better, and guard is his natural position even though he was slid over to right tackle his senior year.

That makes just a center and a guard brought in leaving me to think that Childress is a whole lot more comfortable than me with our situation at tackle.  Maybe he and the scouting department are hoping for some June cuts, or even last minute roster cuts in August, but that is a lot of ifs to plan for.  I surely hope for the running game and pass protection that Childress is right, but in the mean time, I want to be the first to welcome the two “big bellies” on the offensive side of the ball.

This thread discusses the topic: Comfortable at Offensive Tackle

I thought we'd draft an offensive tackle... We didn't and it seems everybody is okay with that.

Plus I'd like to welcome our most likely next generation (2009) Vikings center, John Sullivan.

Thoughts?

I'm not sold on Sullivan yet. We'll see how he does in camp but I wouldn't tag him as the heir apparent just yet.

I was reading all the scouting reports I could find on him last night. The strengths I found was that he has a powerful lower body and is an extremely smart and heady ball player. Weaknesses were listed as short'ish arms, not as fast as you would want pulling, doesn't sustain a drive block well, a little weak in the upper body.

He lettered in 3 or 4 sports in college, football, wrestling, water polo, and I think one other (don't remember - just awoke). Now he will be allowed to focus 100% on football with coaches that can focus on weaknesses and over come them. He will also see Matt Birk work at the position. Birk was drafted in the 6th round in 1998, didn't play until '99 and didn't start until 2000 (which he went the the Pro Bowl).

I too am not convinced that Sullivan is the heir of parent, but I feel Chrildress and company may think so.

Well I am not comfortable at all with the O-Line situation.

We have McKinne who will likely miss at minimun 4-games if he is not traded all together. So who plugs in the important LT position? Artis Hicks?

The Birk situation fries me. Show him the love and the money for what he has done in the past and what he can do in 2008 and 2009.

Now there is the right side of the line...ahhh Ryan Cook? Is he Birks repacement at center and Sully goes to the right side.

All of a sudden our running game does not look as fearsome as you might think...or our passing game ala pass protection.

I think we are still one or two drafts (free agents) away from a serious run. We may make the playoffs this year but we won't go very deep.

But I am willing to be wrong on this...

I'm not as comfortable either... I don't like the McKinnie factor at all. I do however feel good that Cook will continue to develop and be solid with Herrara on the right side...

Birk was not a pro-bowler last year IMHO as I remember he made many mistakes; it's just that with AP putting up the numbers he did that Birk got credit.

I also wish Birk would show up and continue to be a LEADER regardless of his contract situation.

We'll see what happens with trade options and June 1 cuts as things progress. I have a feeling that the Vikes are not done by any means.. the shored up the D; and maybe they feel the can fix some of the O problems via FA and Trades.

I am sure we will add a veteran or two still, whether they come from June 1st cuts or training camp cuts.

The other knock I read on Sullivan was his size Luft. Scouts want him to add bulk but are concerned about his mobility if he does. I guess he was only 284 at the Senior Bowl.

I saw the size bits too, but I think they want it in upper body strength, think arm punch and shedding defenders for an example, and that shouldn't mess with his speed. Speed can also be worked on with agility and speed drills, and he needs it along with learning to explode out of his stance or through his hips to stand up a pass rushing defender, but yes he is a little small. Matt Birk dropped to 285 two years ago after the surgery [and was considered too light] and only came up a little last year.

Size will preclude him from playing tackle there minnjimm (IMHO), but welcome and I appreciate you finally getting your feet wet with a post. It was a good one and keep them coming. Everybody here wants to enjoy winning Viking football and glad you're joining the discussion.

Relying on June 1 or training camp cuts is a gamble too because, either they are old, getting paid too much for their level of play, or just not playing well enough to make that team's active roster, making them at most just a temporary fill, but that may be all we need. Ho-hum... I'm still not settled or comfortable over the whole situation and I too worry how it might limit the good things Adrian, Chester, and Tarvaris can accomplish.

The June 1 cuts don't seem to be as big as they were when the salary cap was being flushed out. Teams are more cap savvy now. But we may need to make a signing to have some depth.

The Jared Allen trade with our 1st rounder and both 3rd rounders limited our drafting opportunities. Tyrell was a good pick, and seems to have been BPA so we traded up to get him. I think we made the right choice in him over an OT. By the time we picked again in the 5th round you're just taking chances on players that have some upside, not expecting to find a starter.
