Pregame Analysis by Dave Stefano
VikingsValhalla.com

Week 1 is underway of the 2007 season and for the Vikings and Falcons it will be an indicator on what we can expect for the entire season.  Pundits have been spewing lines that both of these teams are likely to finish with 10 or more losses, but they have felt that way before, and teams like New Orleans last year prove them wrong.  This year’s version of the Minnesota Vikings has the talent, coaching, and a little more experience in place to make those pundits eat crow, or as in today’s case, Falcons.

Key mathups are all over the field and they will start at the top; Brad Childress has one year under his belt and is more relaxed with the players.  He has passed the play calling torch to Darrell Bevell so that he can better manage all aspects of the game, and observe what is going on in the field of play and on the sideline with his players.  Atlanta has a new head coach in Bobby Petrino, who last year was running the program at LSU.  Petrino was relieved of not having to coach to a different style of offensive football than he is a proponent of, because one of the Vikings nemeses from previous years on the Falcons is no longer in football.  That may be the good news for Petrino, but the bad news is that he has to turn Joey Harrington into the answer.  Childress vs. Petrino, take Childress.

In classic matchup form of players that aren’t on the field at the same time, let’s look at the quarterbacks.  Tarvaris Jackson is making his first campaign start at the head of a Vikings offense that promises to be one of the best at the run, but has huge questions in the passing game.  Veteran leaders like Matt Birk have expressed respect for the man in the huddle and feel he is ready.  The pundit may not believe, but the likes of Birk, Hutchinson, and Richardson all do.  Joey Harrington was selected as franchise QB when he was drafted, just to never fully earn the respect of his players, coaches, and the Lions fans so longing for some decent football.  Released from Detroit last year, Joey made his way to Miami where against the Vikes, he posted his only win against the organization ever, and it was more that last year’s version of the team gave away the game.  Joey is still Joey and in the matchup of Jackson and Harrington, the nod goes to Jackson.

The key matchups are on the field with player versus player.  Look to see how Ryan Cook handles left DE Jamaal Anderson.  Look to see how E.J. Henderson reacts to gimped up Alge Crumpler running across the middle.  Look to see if rookie left guard Justin Blalock and center Todd McClure get manhandled by the newest Viking for life, pro bowl defensive tackle Pat Williams.  Can Jackson deal with all the blitzing?  Can Harrington deal with the crowd noise that he knows will be there?  Can the new one – two punch combo of Chester Taylor and Adrian Peterson run up impressive numbers both statistically and on the scoreboard against a decent defense?  Can passing games be established to free up the running games of both teams?  We shall find out soon enough.  Kickoff is at noon central in the Metrodome.

Thanks. In the future stats will play a more important role in pregame analysis but with this being Week 1, we are starting with a blank slate, and using the preseason's stats isn't a true indicator of anything meaningful, except that the Vikes did get a couple of wins and this years team now knows what it feels like.

The game should be a good one to watch for those lucky enough to be able to. They have been pregamed almost identically to pressure each quarterback hoping to force him into mistakes. Mistake capitalization will be the key to victory, whether it is a player versus player advantage to get a sack, or free a runner, or creating and taking turnovers and producing points from them.

I think that the crowd can be a big factor in the game and I just hope, the O does something big and spectacular to start them up. From that point it will just feed on itself. The secret weapon as Kraze E. believes is the fan. I want to hear the Metrodome rock all the way down here.

24-3, FINAL

Defense outscores the offense 14-10. Game balls to AP 103 yds rushing, 60 receiving with a TD, and Robison for 2 sacks. D had 6 sacks, 2 INTs for TDs,... it was a great start!

Defense clearly lead by THOR as they seriously know how to bring the HAMMER!

Nice way to start. Great day for Peterson! Awesome day for the Viking D!

Heckuva debut for Adrian Peterson!! Why was Mewelde a healthy scratch?

My game balls go to Peterson and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier.

Tarvaris Jackson I give a B. Did nothing great, but nothing glaringly bad, either. That pick wasn't his fault, but Peterson did all the work on his TD pass. Almost made a HUGE mistake when he flung the ball to avoid a sack.

I like Sidney Rice, but none of the other receivers stood out.

Defense was unbelievable!! Great front four pressure, good coverage, and EJ Henderson looks very comfortable in the middle.

Great first game, but offense needs to be more consistent.

It was great to see the team get pressure on D. 5 SACKS!!!

Robison, Edwards, and the Williams Wall were geat; Udeze was... well he got a sack at the end but didn't do much otherwise. Henderson was everywhere and Leber and Greenway played solid too. DB's were OK; and bend but not break. Overall a great Defensive win for the Vikes.

TJack managed the game well for his first "real start"; lets face it; the last 2 were games that didn't count; this one did. As mentioned the INT was not his fault; and his only glaring mistake was that toss over the shoulder. There were a couple of balls that were on the wrong shoulder of the receivers; but all and all he did good enough to win. Not bad.

WOW; AP is gonna prove me wrong in week 1!!! I'm stoked if this kid can stay healthy he will be a great asset for years to come; stepping up and taking the load in your first NFL game is not easy and he didn't look phased one bit. WR's were not steller; Rice is OK; but he needs to get his routes down better and get those 3rd down plays past the sticks; not a yard short. I think that the Falcons decided after Taylor got hurt they were going to make the Vikes run it more and did a good job of taking away most of the passing game. They didn't expect AP to step up like he did.

Great start to the season; good things to build on.

Next week they head to the Motor-Kittys palace.. meow.

Actually it was 6 sacks; 2 from Robison, 2 from Henderson (EJ had a great game), 1 from Spencer Johnson, and the last one by Udeze. We also had a forced fumble by Greenway to go along with the 2 picks.

Who ever had the Vikes' D for their fantasy league had to be smiling.

Anybody notice something missing from this game?

PENALTIES! I think this was one of the most disciplined efforts I've seen from the Purple in years! Heck, one of the 4 (I think) penalties was intentional to give Kluwe more room to punt. I hope this continues as it will affect us down the road...

Very good point Gordo... false starts & holding used to be almost expected on every good gain.

Love the New Improved Viking D!
