Vikings vs Raiders, 18 Nov 2007 Pregame Analysis by Dave Stefano VikingsValhalla.com
Curious? Curious how the crowd will react to the return of Daunte Culpepper? Curious how the crowd will react to poor coaching and game time decisions from Brad Childress? Curious how all those fans dressed as blue seats (thanks WCCO and Miller for the 101st “sellout”) will make all that noise? Me too.
There are a couple of things that Vikings fans have been focused on after last week’s humiliating drumming at the hands of the Green Bay Packers. First is the Vikings true star, Adrian Peterson’s knee. After initial reports and speculation, it looks like a class 2+ sprain/tear of his right LCL with a prognosis of returning to play possibly by the Giants game. He won’t be fully healed for 6 to 10 weeks, but should be strong enough to go between now and then, playing with a special brace, and do no further damage. At least that is what the experts, Dr. James Andrews, the world’s foremost authority on sports injuries said. The team will continue to evaluate it week to week. Not sustaining greater damage to AP’s knee was good news for the franchise and their star player, plus it should keep All Day on track for the Rookie of the Year award and make Eric Dickerson a little nervous about his records.
Secondly, the topic on all fans lips and in the national press, is how Brad Childress still is a head coach. References and comparisons to Les Steckel and the 1984 season abound. We are 3-6 heading into week 11 and no noticeable improvement in sight. There is plenty of talented players on the squad, but through what appears to be mismanagement and lack of adjustments the games keep slipping away. Slipping away is the fan’s enthusiasm to see the team play right along with each effort. This Game against a rebuilding 2-7 Raiders just may be the final case in point.
The Raiders defense is the cure for what ails most teams. They are ranked 29th against the run, 30th against the pass and 29th overall. Chester Taylor who has regained his starting spot while Adrian heals, should have plenty of opportunities for a good day.
Tarvaris Jackson has already been named the starter and has all of the usual suspects to throw to with Sidney Rice the only one on the injury report. He is nursing a sore hamstring but will play. This could be a very good game for Tarvaris to continue his education.
On the opposite side of the ball, we can look forward to a fired up Daunte Culpepper coming at our D with one thing in mind, total embarrassment of them in front of the Minnesota coach and owner that traded him away two years ago. The Vikings defense will have to take a “Not in my house” approach to keep Daunte from getting his “Roll On”. They will focus on pressure, shutting down his reads, and going for the ball. DC’s small hands have earned him a reputation as a fumbler, so every tackle, the defender will be looking to knock the ball out. Couple that and Culpepper’s problem with short and intermediate passes that are part of Kiffin’s system, and the defense could be in for a stellar day and some scoring of their own.
Everything points to an easy Viking win, even with Peterson sidelined, so this is what the Doctor prescribed… a win.

This thread discusses the Content article: Vikings vs Raiders, Week 11
This should be the game that cures all ills. At home and against one of the worst teams in the league... These are the type of game that the Vikings should blow out. I'm hoping that this week we do.
Enjoy my pregame analysis and then friends and family for the game.
GO VIKINGS!

Just to let you know what someone in the national media is saying:

If Daunte Culpepper played for seven clubs in addition to Minnesota and Miami, the Raiders might pull the improbable and produce a winning season. Oakland wheels the guy out every time an ex-team pops up on the schedule, and he turns back the clock. At least he did when he faced the Dolphins earlier this season, throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for three.
I don't expect that to happen here, but I do expect Culpepper to exact revenge.
First, because he's motivated, playing in the Metrodome for the first time since the Vikings traded him to Miami.
Second, because Minnesota can't score. With Adrian Peterson sidelined, I don't know how anyone but Chris Kluwe does much of anything for the Vikes.
I know, the Raiders stink against the run, but do you really think Chester Taylor can do to these guys what Peterson would? Me neither. That's why I like Oakland here.
Something to consider: Five of the Raiders' seven losses have been by seven or fewer points.
Feel the love...

Im back, I will be watching the game on Sunday and I have something to say, Chester Taylor is a damn good running back, people forget that he ran for over 1,000 last year with the same retarded play calling and the same downs syndrome coach, plus he has something to prove!CT will tear it up on Sunday!!

I was at the game and while it was good to see the W on the board; we have a case where a bad Vikings team beat an even worse Raiders team...When your WR is your best rated passeer, 2 for 2 almost 100 yards.... what does that say about your QB situation...

I just got back from visiting family, and didn't have computer access nor saw the game. I know we won, but was it that bad? I saw that Chester had a good day and the run D was outstanding, but that looks to be it.
I've been pondering the anemic passing game. Tarvaris, IMHO, has the physical gifts to be an outstanding NFL QB, the arm, the legs, and smarts enough to score better than a 11 on his wonderlic test.
Is the lack of quality receivers slowing his development?
Is the lack of a vertical offense, or at least an aggressive one slowing development?
Is it him getting hurt every other game?
Or is it the musical chairs at QB this year and lack of consistent starts?
We want a strong running game, but because we have one, shouldn't that help his development?
How much is him being raw and a rookie, and how much is it coaching (or lack there of)?
Just thoughts...

As for the passing game, I think it is a combination of all you have said. TJ was rushed into starting and has suffered a couple of injuries (not necessarily because he was rushed into starting). We started off the season with no #1 receiver or competant backup quarterback. It also seems that the "system" we are running now, is watered down to make it easier for a novice QB, hence no downfield, attacking, passing game. A bad combination of things if you ask me.
Some of our fans suck, pass it on...

Yeah I have seen those fans. the ones who follow blindly without questioning. the ones who get pisses and jump off the bandwagon. the ones who don't stick with there team through thick and thin.
Myself I will be there if we are 0 and 16 I will be there and was when we are 15-1. but I also look at my team honestly and see where we need to imporve and what is totally wrong. ESPN and virtually everyone who knows football is now saying childress is not a head coach. don't hate the messanger. it's just the damn truth. I have never misses a home gamer. tell me where my loayty lies? I challenge you to put in as much time and energy as I do. the gaunlet has been thrown

We barily beat the lowly 1 and 9 raiders. they passed for 351 yards against us. Yes we have a great running game. but if we are not consistantly being outcoached then how did the packers come to the game totally ready for us and we had the deer in the headlights look? aim low shoot low aim high shoot high. you can have mediocre expectations and then you get mediocre results. I myself have high expectations of myself and I also have high expectations of my team. I want alot more out of this team!!!!! new coach new QB new wide recievers and I see superbowls. you get what you expect. good luck lowball shooters. I pay alot for my 14 season tickets I want a great team on the field not a ok team not a good team I demand a GREAT team. I want the teams we had in the 70's and New England proves its possible.
Sighed
I want MORE!!!!!

I've told you about Kevin Brown's player analysis before. Here is this week's against the Raiders.
Personnel Analysis: Week #10
He details every player's performance, mostly in a positive manner. It can be an encouraging read.
