Afetr signing a deal that will secure his family for generations to come, the Vikings have come to terms with their #1 target, Bernard Berrian.

Berrian deal announced

March 1st, 2008 – 4:26 PM by Kevin Seifert

The Vikings have agreed to terms with WR Bernard Berrian on a six-year contract and an announcement should come before the night is up.

UPDATE II: The Vikings have called a 7 p.m. news conference to introduce Berrian. We’ll bring you reaction as soon as possible thereafter.

UPDATE: We have independently confirmed the news. FoxSports is also reporting it, along with our friends at the Chicago Sun-Times. Also, the Sun-Times reports the deal is worth a total of $42 million with $16 million guaranteed, making Berrian the NFL’s fourth highest-paid receiver in the NFL.

There have been indications for most of the day that a deal was close, beginning when Berrian inadvertently popped his head into the team’s practice facility prior to a news conference with new S Madieu Williams. Berrian was wearing a Vikings hat and carrying a jersey with his name on it, not exactly the sartorial selection of a guy who was having a bad visit.

Berrian has remained at Winter Park all day as agent Drew Rosenhaus negotiated the deal with the Vikings.

A #1 Receiver to be Announced

This thread discusses the Content article: A #1 Receiver to be Announced

Whether you believe that Bernard Berrian is a true #1 or not, the Vikings surely did, and they were not about to repeat the mistake of last year. "Berrian was reported to be wearing a Vikings hat and carrying a jersey with his name on it", when he stuck his head out prior to Williams' introduction press conference. That means the seduction was successful.

And this proves once again that Zyggi has no problems opening the purse strings to try and make this team better.

Welcome Bernard, and may Odin bless your abilities to battle on the football field and Tyr guide you and the team to glory and honor. Skol!

With how atrocious the Bears offense was last year and to have him still come close to a 1,000 yards tells me he's ready for a breakout year this season. Give him man to man coverage and let him work with Jackson in the offseason and we could see a lot of big plays out of him this year.

Now is this the end or do we keep looking for WR's?

Javon Walker anybody? And of course Randy is still out there. (I know that will never happen.)

From Access Vikings:
– There was a report today on ESPN’s website that the Vikings were one of 10 teams that had inquired about recently released receiver Javon Walker. My guess is that phone call was made just in case the Vikings failed to land Berrian. We asked Spielman about the interest in Walker after the Berrian presser. “We’ll look at all options,” Spielman said. “We’ll explore everything. Once we do our due diligence, if there’s someone out there, a player out there that can fill a need for us, we’ll definitely try to address it.” This is NFL speak for: I’m not going to answer that question.

– Even if the Vikings don’t pursue Walker that doesn’t mean they are done looking for help at receiver. Word is the team has interest in one of New England’s free-agent receivers. No, it’s not Randy Moss. It’s Jabar Gaffney, who had 36 receptions for 449 yards and five touchdowns this season. Don’t know yet whether a visit is being set up for Gaffney. (By the way, the Moss situation is turning into one of the most interesting stories in free agency. So much for that: He’s going right back to New England stuff.)

– Update on Gaffney: Just checked on who represents Gaffney. It’s none other than Drew Rosenhaus, who also is the agent for Bernard Berrian. Seems like a good possibility that Drew tried to sell the Vikings on Gaffney while he was doing the Berrian deal.

Or will try to get a second teer guy and then draft that kid from Oklahoma?

Right now Berrian is #1 and Sidney Rice #2 on the depth chart but we are thin after that. Yes, we have Allison, but is he ready to be a slot guy? Fergy is a free agent and may sign elsewhere. We have little Bobby Wade too (who just went under the knife):
WR Bobby Wade was recently in Minnesota to have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. Wade injured the knee in October and played the rest of the season despite being hobbled. So I full expect that we'll pick up at least one more receiver and maybe two or three by the time free agency and the draft are done.
