Matt Birk, has been the center for the Minnesota Vikings for the last 10 years.  The Harvard grad has played through sports hernias and other minor injuries to lead the offensive line from the great line in 1998, to last year’s that provided the #1 ranked rushing attack in the league.  He is going into the last year of his contract and the Vikings have yet to offer an extension.  This is what has people wondering why, and Matt’s own displeasure on why nothing has been done.

Birk has stated that he will be not partaking in any of the “voluntary” workouts and OTAs.  It is still unclear if he will be present for the mandatory mini camps starting in June.  He is working out privately with former Vikings long snapper Mike Morris and promises to be ready to play, but the question is with what type of heart.

The Vikings have gotten the very best out of the St. Paul native.  He has made the Pro Bowl 6 times in the years he played.  Other that his sports hernias that threatened to kill his career, he’s been there every snap just as Kevin Seifert and Judd Zulgad have written in the Star Tribune this morning.

“Birk has resurrected his career since missing four games in 2004 and all of the '05 season because of multiple sports hernias and surgery to both hips. He hasn't missed a snap since his return, playing every down of the 2006 and '07 seasons, and is considered one of the top five centers in the NFL.”

Who says he can’t play 3, 5 or maybe more years as captain of the O line?  If that is the case why isn’t the club pushing to lock him up?  They gave Pat Williams an extension to end his career and it resulted in a starting Pro Bowl selection.  Matt Birk was also elected to last year’s squad as the #2 center, so that proves that he is still playing at the highest of levels.  What is the brain trust in the front office thinking?  Do they think they can go cheap and save the $5-7 million a year that it would take to keep Matty?  Is it worth it?  And do they realize the cost in leadership, and the example it is giving to other players that the Vikes do not want to take care of their own?

"I don't feel like I need to plead my case for a contract.  I think my career and my 10 years in this league speak for themselves."  Birk said.

It does speak for itself, and with plenty of cap room now and long term, there is no reason that the Vikings shouldn’t get a deal done and getting Matty back in going above and beyond as in the previous ten seasons.

Get ‘er done!

This thread discusses the Content article: Matt Birk's Displeasure

With all the cap space the Vikes have, making a Phat Pat type of extension for someone that does deserve it, seems like a no brainer. Ryan Cook may be Matty’s eventual replacement, but right now he is adequate at right tackle, and moving him to center at this time would put the Vikes in a bigger crisis at OT and not just for depth.

Matt is smart, he helped with coaching when he was injured, obviously knows the game, so pay him the money for a few more years. It is a better deal than trying to figure out an offense behind a new guy, be it breaking in some rookie or playing musical vets while the immediate window of opportunity closes further.

Get ‘er done!

Florio from ProFootballTalk.com had this one sentence blurp last night.

A couple of readers tell us that this house for sale in Minnesota belongs to Matt Birk.

Nice house, but a player putting his house, the 12,371 square foot one built in 2005 for sale does not bode well for the whole situation.

I wonder what it is about this story that we don't know?

So what... now Matt Birk is the new prima donna of this team.

Be a leader and do what is right by the team; and I just bet that things will be done right by you....

I wouldn't read a lot into this. Could just be the media blowing things out of proportion. (not that they EVER do that )

Lets just pay the man and move on... He is well worth the money.

More on the Birk situation is starting to come out:
Childress: No extension looming for Birk
April 2nd, 2008 – 12:07 PM by Kevin Seifert

PALM BEACH, FLA. — Coach Brad Childress confirmed the Vikings have no plans to extend the contract of C Matt Birk, explaining that he prefers to see how Birk plays in 2008 before determining whether the Vikings want to retain him.

Birk was informed of that decision earlier this offseason. In response, he said last month that he would skip the voluntary portion of the Vikings’ conditioning program, including all Organized Training Activities.

“We usually get into these things during the year,” Childress said when asked why the Vikings aren’t touching Birk’s contract, which will pay him a total of $5.72 million this season before expiring in March 2009.

“He’s been a loyal guy,” Childress added. “He’s been a good football player. He’s been a Pro Bowler. Just the fact that you want to see. You want to see him play. He may afford us the opportunity to re-sign him or he may stick his nose up in the air. I just want to see him play, that’s all. I think people make a lot of it. He’s got a contract. He’s got a good contract. Everyone wants to get a year ahead of themselves. Let’s take it one day at a time.”

"He may afford us the opportunity to re-sign him or he may stick his nose up in the air." - I sense a little tension or something there with that statement.

If this does turn out to be Matty's final season, it gives the front office more reasons to trade up and draft a stud OT. IMHO. [From what I've read to date, there are no stud centers in this year's draft class and Cook is the theoretical heir of parent to Birk's job.]

This will definitely be interesting in its development. Then of course Matty could play lights out, be offered an extension and take it. You never know, but it sure looks like to this casual observer there is some bad blood being brewed up in the mean time.

What do you think?

I think Birk is gone after this season and there is obvious tension with that statement in mind.

He's calling him out if you read between the words.... interesting to see how this pans out.

Do you think that Childress is doing this as some sort of motivational thing?

Or what? They don't get along? Birk is smarter than Chilly? It is all about the money? Any other possibilities that I'm not thinking of?
