McKinnie arrested after Miami fight

The Vikings left tackle reportedly spit on a bouncer outside a club, shoved a camera phone into his face and slammed a pole over his head.

INDIANAPOLIS - Vikings left tackle Bryant McKinnie was arrested early Sunday after an incident at a downtown Miami nightclub.

McKinnie, who lives in Davie, Fla., and played for the University of Miami, was involved in a large street brawl outside an establishment known as Club Space. The 28-year-old was arrested and charged with aggravated battery, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest without violence.

The Associated Press reported police said McKinnie was transported to jail with injuries, but the extent was not known. The story was first reported on the Miami Herald's website.

Several Vikings officials, including Vice President of Player Personnel Rick Spielman and coach Brad Childress, were in Indianapolis on Sunday at the NFL Scouting Combine. The team released a statement saying: "We are aware of the situation with Bryant McKinnie. We will respond further once we have collected the appropriate information."

According to a Miami police report obtained by The Herald, McKinnie spit on the face of a bouncer, 32-year-old Eric Otero, shoved a camera phone into his face and then picked up a heavy pole and slammed it over Otero's head. This occurred in front of a large crowd.

The trouble had started when Otero attempted to eject the 6-8, 335-pound McKinnie from the club. As he was being taken out of the establishment, McKinnie yelled obscenities and spit in Otero's face according to police. Otero said if McKinnie left, he would not press charges.

The police then saw McKinnie entering a nearby strip club. But the Herald reported that, at about 6:30 a.m., police were again called to Club Space. Police found McKinnie "in the middle of a large crowd, throwing punches and again yelling obscenities" at Otero, the police report said. The police told him to stop, but he refused and boarded a charter bus. The driver of the bus was ordered not to leave.

McKinnie was bonded out for $9,000 on Sunday afternoon, Miami-Dade County Corrections Department spokeswoman Janelle Hall told the AP.

McKinnie's agent, Ben Dogra, didn't return a call Sunday night.

This isn't McKinnie's first brush with the law.

He was involved in the Vikings' infamous Love Boat incident on Lake Minnetonka in 2005 and ended up pleading guilty to charges of misdemeanor disorderly conduct. He had to pay $2,000 in fines and perform 48 hours of community service. McKinnie, who signed a seven-year contract extension worth $48.5 million in 2006, also was fined one game's pay by the NFL.

In October 2005, misdemeanor charges were dismissed against McKinnie and fellow Vikings offensive lineman Marcus Johnson in connection with an overnight disturbance at a Minneapolis service station.

This thread discusses the Content article: McKinnie Arrested

What an idiot! [I'm thinking of different words.] He was part of the one of the best left sides in Vikings history, and now he may have pissed that all away over some trivial disagreement with a bouncer.

There should be a no drinking without a handler in public places and definitely no drinking and driving built into everyone of these guys' contracts. Hire them a chauffeur/butler/security type that can act as the players common sense when he is drinking flammable liquids that would impair his judgment. A well paid babysitter that can guard the Vikings' investment.

I talked to Jimmie Kleinsasser back in Grand Forks years ago and he was being chauffeured around. He said "it is [was] because the team didn't want them drinking and driving." Jimmy was smart enough to take the advice and is now going into 9th season. Bryant McKinnie seems not to have as much smarts and has been involved in this type of attention getting behavior before.

This changes free agency and the draft for the Vikes. We needed to draft O line anyway. Whether it is issues with Ryan Cook at right tackle, or Ryan eventually sliding to center if Matt Birk gets hurt or retires, or just plain old need for depth, it was needed. Now, however, we need a starting left tackle, because McKinnie will surely be suspended at the least, and could go to prison for a long time. Thanks Bryant!

Here is Mike Florio’s version of the report, there are many more all over the web.

McKINNIE GETS PINCHED IN MIAMI

More than two years after being arrested for a very different kind of disorderly conduct, Vikings left tackle Bryant McKinnie has been busted again for disorderly conduct and other charges in Miami.

McKinnie was arrested on Sunday after allegedly spitting in the face of a bouncer at a nightclub, shoving a camera phone into his face, and then slamming a heavy pole over his head.
McKinnie is charged with aggravated battery, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest without violence.

The most troubling charge is aggravated battery, since it is a second-degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

That'll be a total of 13 points for the Vikings, and it'll re-set the "days without an arrest" counter to zero.

McKinnie got a long-term deal from the Vikings notwithstanding his Love Boat shenanigans, primarily since high-end left tackles don't grow on trees. Thus, it'll be hard for the Vikings to take a stand against McKinnie unless and until they find someone else who can play left tackle.

NFL biggest concern for McKinnie/UPDATED
February 25th, 2008 – 12:15 PM by Kevin Seifert

The charges against LT Bryant McKinnie include one felony, for aggravated battery, and two misdemeanors following his apparent brawl outside a Miami nightclub Sunday morning.

There is no way to predict how the case will proceed. But if history is a guide, McKinnie’s harshest punishment could come not from law enforcement but from the NFL.

McKinnie is now a repeat offender of the NFL’s personal conduct policy; he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct for his role in the 2005 Love Boat incident. The league policy was strengthened considerably last year, and commissioner Roger Goodell pledged to deal harshly with players who encounter multiple incidents. Notably, Goodell said he was prepared to hand out discipline before the final adjudication of court proceedings for repeat offenders.

So while jail time seems pretty unlikely for McKinnie, a suspension at some point during the 2008 season looms as a real possibility. Ironically, it would be the first game McKinnie has missed in his seven-year career.

UPDATE: McKinnie has a March 17 court date set in Miami-Dade (Fla.) county court to answer to the charges.

I don't know. Ya, he's got his issues - but you just don't drop your 1st Round Left Tackle and hope you can find a replacement in the offseason for a developing QB.

It's easy to put on Purple Shades and say "ah, it was nothing". But it wasn't in the vein of beating a stripper or having a possemate paralyze a bouncer.

He got in a fight at a bar. It happens thousands of times a night. Yes, I HATE the fact it was a Viking. But a bar fight is a bar fight. I only read one article re: the subject, but didn't get the impression it was a Vick calibar offense.

Yes, it was wrong. But an altercation with a security guard and spitting / hitting aren't IMHO critical issues.

His only other transgression was the Party Boat - and that wasn't a violent episode like this sounds like.

What I heard on the radio or read somewhere yesterday was that he picked up one of those poles that have the retractable tape/hang a felt rope on type people control, i.e. line up here poles and tried to crush the bouncer's skull with it. That is where the aggravated battery comes into play. That is where it moves out of the realm of simple bar fight to use of a weapon, IMHO.

Ahhh...yes, that does push it outside the realm of "normal bar fight". Just sucks. Why can't these million-dollar-babies get they aren't gods on earth?

Just read where Bryant is lucky that the crime rate is so high in Miami that they will be focusing on even more violent or serious crimes and he probably won't get jail time. The article by Sean Jensen, Legal load probably less in Miami for Minnesota Vikings lineman Bryant McKinnie, points out that if this happened in Minny that McKinnie would be serving some manditory time of at least a year.

It is semi-good news that McKinnie should only get probation and should be available to play, if Goodell doesn't suspend him for any great period of time. Bryant is a second offender against the personnel conduct policy and good old Roger might think a year, instead of 4 months or less just might be the correct response.

I wonder how long he will have us in suspense.
