It is looking like Adrian Peterson is the prime victim to make the cover of this year's Madden 09.  If so, does he break the curse [if you are inclined to believe in it]?

Adrian Peterson: Madden 09 cover front-runner

peterson3a.jpg

Last year prior to the Madden 08 cover announcement I supported the idea of putting selecting Devin Hester. There was no doubt he was one of the most valuable players in the league and arguably the most exciting. The impact he had for his team was unmatched although in a non-traditional way through special teams.

This year it’s another rookie that looks like he could be the most appealing option for the Madden cover. Adrian Peterson has quickly established himself as the best RB in the league, even breaking the single game rushing record this past weekend with 296 yards. Not only does he lead the league in rushing, he is over 300 yards ahead of Willie Parker who is second. Oh, and he does all of this while the Vikings have no passing game and the opposition keys in on trying to stop the run.

Something that has been sorely lacking from Madden the last couple years is the level of overall excitement. There is no “game day” feel, everything just comes across as bland. Choosing a cover player that could get across improvements to that aspect of the game and fit in with the yearly hype behind Madden would be ideal. Peterson would be a great representative, better than Vince Young was. Young had success as the Titans overachieved, however it was more due their defense than him performing at a high level. That has been the case again this season. I’m not sure there is anyone that even makes sense other than Peterson right now.

When you look at possibilities for 09, guys like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Randy Moss are basically invalidated due to previous covers they have been on. LaDainian Tomlinson has already turned down the Madden cover so he won’t be given another opportunity. Choosing Young for 08 went away from how EA had previously put a player that represented the game’s theme for the year. So it is hard to know whether that will become a trend or if they’ll go back to it. Will they look for a defensive player or just the most marketable? There are a lot of variables to consider.

We’ve only reached the halfway point of the season so things may look completely different by the time the year ends. But as of right now who do you see as the top candidates for the 09 cover?

Peterson on Madden 09?

This thread discusses the Content article: Peterson on Madden 09?

I saw that AD may be on the front cover of Madden 09 and after reading and posting the story on Cookie's Curse this has me a bit worried.

Anthony Hall in his Vikings War Cry blog Vikings Notes: AD Edition writes:
*Continuing with the AD theme, here’s some frightening news: Adrian may be a likely candidate to appear on the cover of Madden 09. I believe I speak for all Vikings fans when I say: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, ADRIAN, DON’T DO IT. Friends, the Madden Curse has been well-documented…if he appears on the cover of next year’s Madden, something horrible is bound to happen. Besides, as fans of the Purple, we already know what the Madden Curse is capable of:

Former Minnesota Vikings star quarterback Daunte Culpepper appeared on the Madden NFL 2002 cover after throwing for nearly 4,000 yards and 33 touchdowns while rushing for 470 yards and 7 more scores in the 2000 season. However, Culpepper struggled with turnovers in the first 11 games of the 2001 season, throwing 13 interceptions and only 14 touchdown passes. A back injury ended his season in the 11th game.

Adrian, I know you may want to be the guy who finally breaks the curse. But seriously, consider that the 10 players who have appeared on the game had combined to play in 39 Pro Bowls prior to being on the cover, but only made four Pro Bowl appearances afterward. That’s just creepy. I’m usually not superstitious, but I’ll make an exception for the Madden Curse.

I know that Adrian and his agent probably think the money and the publicity for doing this is a great thing, but to risk it?... LaDainian Tomlinson has already turned down the Madden cover so he won’t be given another opportunity, but he didn't have any catastrophic season ending calamities either.

I know none of this is within our control as fans, but we all want to see AD succeed and the Vikings make and win the big game, preferably with Peterson getting his 2000 yards and leading the way.

Are you superstitious over sports?

Funny this post should appear here! I was thinking this morning that I hoped with all of his accolades from this season, that AP didn't do the Madden cover. PLEASE, don't do it...

Curses are real, documented, and not to be *bleeped* with.

AP on Madden?

I say do it, put up 2000 yds and 20 tds, win the MVP of both the regular season and the Super Bowl. The best thing about so called curses is breaking them (ask the Red Sox). I think AP is the guy to break the curse. Any athlete afraid to be on the cover doesn't believe in his abilities enough (no heart).

Cuz that's worked out so well for everyone in the past. The Madden curse isn't just a one year thing, it seems to carry over into multiple seasons for most victims (i.e. Donovan McNabb, Marshall Faulk, and arguably Michael Vick to name a few). It's not worth risking the career of someone that many think could go down as one of the best to ever play the game.

This documents every player to appear on the cover, including Luis Castillo and his limited release spanish cover. They only cover the first year of the curse. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madden_curse

Don't forget about the next season when he single-handedly turned the ball over 46 times. Like Noroof said, don't *bleep* with the Madden Curse.

Dateline 10 March [okay, it actually came out on the 7th] from the Sporting News:
Could Brett Favre Be On the Madden Cover?
Mar 07, 2008 01:28 PM | By Chris Littmann

Sports don't start and end with a referee's whistle. FirstCuts, a blog dedicated to sports culture, will cover everything outside the lines, from games to gear.

A little less than a month ago, rumors started to pop up that Super Bowl winning QB Eli Manning would grace the cover of Madden 09. There hasn't been any confirmation or denial, but in a blog posting from March 3, EA Sports president Peter Moore writes, "I know who’s on the cover of Madden this year – any guesses????"

Well, there's Manning obviously. But Moore's post went up before Brett Favre's retirement. You've got to think that a Madden title would think twice about using Manning over Favre at this point. I'd also add Tom Brady or Adrian Peterson as wild cards in this whole race.

Now if Eli plays as badly as he does against the Vikings normally, with the Madden curse, that game could be devastating for Eli and Giants. Boy, wouldn't that just break your heart?

Past history shows that the folks at EA Sports usually put a football player on the cover that represents a/the new game feature(s) that they want to emphasize such as Sean Alexander with the new RB features (hit stick in 2007) ... Cullpepper with the QB enhancements in 2002... Ray Lewis with the Defensive features in 2005 etc...

Since this would be the last shot at it... I'll bet you a frack#@$^%@#* dollar that they add a "Legend mode" or some such malarkey just for the sake of being able to put farve on the cover of '09.... John Madden (and the rest of the sports media has some seriously unhealthy brett-man-love (sick chubby) issues.......

i'm not saying...

i'm just saying...
