The former Bears star was at the top of Minnesota's wish list and bolstered the team's receiving corps after agreeing to a six-year, $42 million contract.

By JUDD ZULGAD, Star Tribune

Bernard Berrian was never considered the No. 1 receiver in his four seasons with the Chicago Bears despite the fact he felt he was "definitely prepared for it." He won't have to worry about lacking that designation any longer.

The Vikings made sure of that Saturday night when they signed the 27-year-old free agent to a $42 million, six-year contract that includes $16 million in guarantees. Berrian, who will get $23 million over the first three years, reportedly will become the fourth-highest-paid receiver in the NFL.

Not bad for a guy who has never had a 1,000-yard season or made a Pro Bowl appearance. Berrian, however, was considered one of the top receivers on the market. Chicago offered him $25 million over five years. This came after he had a career-high 71 receptions in 2007. That was 17 more than Vikings team leader Bobby Wade, a former teammate of Berrian's in Chicago.

"We were just missing syncing up the passing game, and obviously good players help you to improve that," Vikings coach Brad Childress said.

"We have the running game where we want, and you don't want to be one-dimensional in this league," Childress said.

I'm picturing Adrian sitting in front of his TV hearing the news and wringing his hands in anticipation...

AD vs. a standard defense? Oh my. Seriously...what part of our team shows a glaring weakness now?

Only a pass rush from the outside. Hopefully now that's where we can go in the draft for sure.

Well, guess with the assumption that is going to be addressed - it's just a matter of TJack's positively maturing. Showing improvement. He isn't going to be what we ideally want, but wanna see progress. I also wish we used his legs a little more, but I'm nitpicking.

Bernard Berrian fires you guys up? Really?

Decent numbers in 2007, but he's just a guy. Not a bad guy, not a great guy, but just a guy.

And yes, he's an upgrade, and that's a good thing, but for that kind of money throw a few extra at Moss and bring him home.

It will be interesting to see how all those ex-Bear receivers will do for the purple next year.

Maybe Willie Gault can be hired as the WR coach.

No, he doesn't fire me up per say. But he is a definate threat. And all I want is someone to get that extra man out of the box. I don't think many teams would let him run down the field without safety help. That's all. Yes, he is going to make more money than he has warranted so far. But he is the best one out there and I don't care to put hopes in a rookie via the draft. 4 years experience is just about right to invest in the WR IMO.

Considering the options; YES I am fired up that we have a proven weapon. Lets face it.. Grossman/Griese/Orton got him the ball 70+ times and he was almost 1000 yards last season.... WITHOUT A GOOD RUNNING GAME... he is going to allow the O to open up the playbook and force teams to keep that extra guy out of the box... as Rosco stated... opening it up for AP to run wild.

Talking to a buddy today that is a bears fan... well at least he grew up in Chicago... he explained the Berrian to Minnesota as this:

"The bears don't have QB who can throw anyway... what point in keeping a good WR?"
